WHEN WE DROVE into Mendocino, Daisy leaned between the two front seats, giving Lara directions. As we got closer, creeping down a dirt road through the forest, she let out a long, excited trill that reminded me of Frankie eagerly whining whenever he spotted another dog through the car window. “Here, here, here,” she said, waggling her finger at the last driveway. Daisy’s stepfather popped out the front door when we pulled in, wearing a full apron that said Make Food, Not War.

“I’m roasting an artichoke,” he said, after Daisy skipped over to him. He looped his arm around her shoulders, his mouth relaxed in an easy grin, his green eyes bright.

“This is Turquoise,” Daisy said. “And Dolores.”

Lara shook her head. “It’s Lara.” She spoke at the same time he did. Their words echoed. I laughed, then pinched my lips shut when Daisy gave me a look.

“What?” Lara said.

“How interesting.” His eyes twinkled as if a spell had been cast. “I’m Larry.”

“And I’m starving,” Daisy said, tugging his hand to haul him inside.
